New Army Parents Get More Time at Home.

WASHINGTON (Army News Service, July 3, 2008) - Military mothers of newborns, and certain Army parents adopting a child, will be able to stay home longer before deploying or serving overseas, starting Aug. 1.

The new policy will lengthen deferments from four to six months for new mothers before being deployed, assigned to a dependent-restricted overseas tour, an accompanied overseas tour where concurrent travel is denied or temporary duty away from their home station.

Soldiers with deferments ending prior to Aug. 1 will complete their four-month deferment but, commanders are encouraged to give Soldiers six months if operationally feasible, said Conway.

Soldiers who are under deferments as of Aug. 1 will be eligible for the extended six-month policy, unless waived by the individual Soldier concerned.

It always made wonder how they justified getting deployed after four months deferment but they give you six months to get back into shape and take a PT test.  Kind of ranks right up there where you can be too fat/too lazy to stay in during peace time operations but damn, the second your unit gets called up, that bar to reenlist automatically disappears.

birthday gift ideas [Jul. 17th, 2008|01:04 pm]

[herquivers]
hello.

so my boyfriends birthday is three days from now but his party is in two. and i need help.
he loves music but he cant stand simple mixes, so thats out. he's a closet romantic, as in he'll come off very masculine and unaffected but deep down he's very soft. i have great (no, FABULOUS) style so im thinking i may get him a shirt or something.

in any case, i want to make something else that is homemade. i am a writer and i love poetry, but im wondering if any of you have any ideas? no saying "just write him a poem".
i need something thatll bring him out of his "big man" shell and that will make him very happy. please help me!

Real post coming later, but I just wanted to say I'm loving Starbucks' new Vivanno smoothies right now.   (Actually, I think they're just a fancy protein shake but who cares as long as it's good, y/y?)  They've only had them a few days at our local Starbucks and I've only had the banana chocolate one, but I love how light tasting they are.  It's not overpowering with chocolate like an ice cream shake would be and there's just a hint of banana.  I'm mucho excited too because I was given a coupon for a freebie when I stopped for one this morning on the way to work.

Katie & Patrick's Vermont Wedding [Jul. 17th, 2008|12:44 am]

(click for slideshow)

Katie and Patrick were married in their alma mater's chapel with a reception to follow at a nearby hotel-- the crowning event of the evening was a performance by the Rubble Bucket Orchestra, one of their favorite bands.

The groom and all of his groomsmen are in a band called Japhy Ryder, and the song used for the slideshow is one of their songs that the bride picked out for me.

Never have I been mistaken for feminine; nor has the word "traditional' ever applied to me.

college. . . [Jul. 16th, 2008|10:26 am]

i'm going to college next year to study language and international affairs. i want to be a part of the revolution, join the peace corps, work for non-profits trying to change where our world is headed. i was talking about this to my grandmother yesterday and she believes it's a waste of money to go to college if i'm just going to work for non-profits. i couldn't help but wonder, i'm i missing something or is she? if i'm going to go to college and learn about the world its history and its people shouldn't i use that intellect to help the world and its people--even this means little income--rather than work for a corporation continuing to ruin the world?

what are your opinions on this or on college education in general?

[mood |cold]

I owe you all a post and its been a long time comming.
As you may or may not know i recently moved out of home with my lover.
We are residing in my childhood home which my parents still own outside of town.
We have a dog, a rat and 3 chickens.
Our water runs on solar and we feed all our scraps to the chooks.
I like the feeling of feeding our leftovers to animals who in turn lay eggs for us to eat.
The cycle is just so natural i wish all things could be that way.
ANYWAY i want to post trillions of pictures but my boyfriend scared me by telling me people will stalk me if i do.
Which was a terrifying thought since ive alreayd posted pictures of myself many times before;
So i decided to be a rebel and post these ones anyway;
They are of our first dinner/night in our new home.

[Cold; Bare; Empty; Stare ]

[Saucepans; Steam; Lettuce; Beans]

[Candles; Burn; Heat; Churn]

[Bedtime; Yawns; Smiles; Adore]

So thats all folks, and i promise ill make sure i post more regularly again,
Its just hard finding a new routine in a place/time youve never been before.
I think ill go have peaches and yogurt now [even though its feezing] and then maybe a hot chocolate!
Yum!

P.S. Oh and black books is definately on the menu tonight im thinking.

It's Ours

there is always that space there
just before they get to us
that space
that fine relaxer
the breather
while say
flopping on a bed
thinking of nothing
or say
pouring a glass of water from the
spigot
while entranced by
nothing

that
gentle pure
space

it's worth

centuries of
existence

say

just to scratch your neck
while looking out the window at
a bare branch

that space
there
before they get to us
ensures
that
when they do
they won't
get it all

ever.

I read this article on myspace after I was done reading my horoscope. I thought maybe it would be something nice for the community since it would include just about everyone and we all love music. Even if you don't have a myspace, you can still use it to listen to the songs listed.

Your profile song is more than just a catchy tune -- it creates a strong first impression. And it says a lot about where you are in life. Look to your Sun sign to figure out which track is your ultimate theme.

Aries (March 21 - April 19)
Bombastic Aries, forceful, loud metal is truly your style. Consider "My Curse" by Killswitch Engage.

Taurus (April 20 - May 20)
Steady Taurus, you appreciate a solid drumbeat. Try Common's mellow "I Am Music."

Gemini (May 21 - June 20)
You need something with strong vocals and flirty lyrics. Check out hip hop group Little Jackie's "Stoop" or their homage to text-talk, "LOL."

Cancer (June 21 - July 22)
Watery Cancer, you appreciate sentimentality and old-school romance -- like the Arctic Monkeys' cover of "Baby, I'm Yours."

Leo (July 23 - August 22)
You can relate to the diva mentality. Madonna is a natural choice; pick star-studded "4 Minutes."

Virgo (August 23 - September 22)
You're all about strength and self-sufficiency. Go for an acoustic Ani Difranco ballad, like "32 Flavors."

Libra (September 23 - October 22)
Stylish, you like dulcet vocals and harmonious tunes. Kylie Minogue's sweet "All I See" is romantic and poolside-ready -- like you!

Scorpio (October 23 - November 21)
You like moody and dark -- like Rufus Wainright's haunting, mournful "In My Arms."

Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21)
You embrace foreign sounds -- as long as they're fast-paced! "Sirenes de la Fete" by Brazilian Girls is ideal.

Capricorn (December 22 - January 19)
You are traditional, so stick to classic rock. Try Leonard Cohen's wry ode, "I'm Your Man."

Aquarius (January 20 - February 18)
Tech-savvy and revolutionary, you'll find that anything by genre-bending rebel MIA will be at home on your profile -- try "Galang."

Pisces (February 19 - March 20)
You're dreamy and like your music the same way. Loopless's mellow "Pink Blue Hotel" should be right up your alley.
